The Smith Westerns + Jorm

Fader posted a cool new track from a band called The Smith Westerns.  I love the old school waling guitar that serves as a table cloth instead of a center piece.  The writer on the Fader blog describes the song more conceptually than I could do justice.  I do agree, this song could grit up any Cameron Crowe scene nicely.

We all do this internally, when we hear this song.  Which leads me to wonder, what happened to interpretive dance as comedy...

show your grillz: mp3's for your holiday weekend

Its Memorial Day Weekend, SHOW YOUR GRILLZ (like Juicy-J).   All you weekend warriors out there, its the summer version of Christmas.  The sun stays out until eight and you have an extra day away from the cube (and for you college brats, finals are over/you graduated and you have one more weekend before the real world...enjoy).

Here are some aural presents under the proverbial Christmas (palm) Tree, a variety of NEW tracks perfect for any roof top, backyard BBQ where all the beer is bottled and clothes are optional.  (ankle deep in the plastic pool, hose in hand...who wants to run through the sprinklers!)

First time hearing about BBU, but, this song is electro beats meets dirty south group rap.  The flows are silky and the song is accessible in a non top 40 synthetic.  This song makes me want to gather a circle, get my shoulders real low, glass in the air and high step the beat.  "CHI Don't Dance" no more!

=====

New track from Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest (out the day you get back to work).  "While You Wait For the Others" is definitely for your late night sesh's over left overs, but, its an amazing new song...so grilling or otherwise spread the love.

======

Holy Ghost! remixed Phoenix's "Lisztomania."  Solid addition to keep an open aired vibe that doesn't make people feel like they should be rolling.  Not totally indie, not totally electro, but, absolutely a summer jam.

======

A little indie, island flavor for any Echo Park balcony BBQ.  Definitely good towards the end of the night.  I love Binki.

Catch Little Joy on tour this summer (minus Fabrizio Moretti, who is recording with the Strokes)

Suckers Video for "Easy Chair"

"Easy Chair" reminds me a lot of an evolved male version of Feist's "1-2-3-4."  As mentioned by some crtitics, the video looks like iTunes visualizer at points; but overall its a vision.  The vocals are my favorite part of the song, adding a slight madening tone, backed by playful instrumentals (very sing song, try getting the melody out of your head).  I am going out to buy Suckers' EP Suckers right now!

Young Chris Sounds Like Old Jay

From the moment Young Chris drops into his flow, he sounds like a Roccafela we have become to love over the years.  The beat is simple putting out a blown out psych vibe and allowing Young Chris' lyrics to take center stage.  This is pitch perfect rap.

The Road Trailer & Cass McCombs Video

When I read that the Proposition director, John Hillcoat's next project was taking Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road to screen, using screenplay by Nick Cave (of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds) my head nearly exploded.  The Proposition was one of 2005's highly underrated, under-appreciated films.  It was a period piece set in the outback, but wielded a sharp blade of imagery and themes, that the Western genre (and period pieces) sometimes  seems to cartoon or gloss over (with tea party's and vintage auto's).

In addition, the last McCarthy novel to hit the big screen was No Country for Old Men and it  gnabbed a wagon full of Oscars.  Taking no credit away from the Coen brothers, but, for them to direct an impeccable film, there needed to be an impeccable story.  So imagine the Proposition telling a story by the same author of No Country for Old Men...are you excited yet?

If not, please meet Nick Cave.  Nick Cave is the lead architect, songwriter, lead singer of music group Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.  Since the bands inception in the early 80's, he has emerged from frontman to be considered an authentic poet and writer.  Nick Cave was responsible for rhythmic script for the Proposition and like a diligent song writer weaved in tones of passion, gentility, and ferocity. (was even taped by Russell Crowe to write a sequel to Ridley's Oscar winning Gladiator)

So run down the list:
Director...check, story...check, screenplay...check, actors, Viggo and Charlize...check.

All the pieces are in place for an extraordinary theater experience.

I have to read The Road before the film's release on October 16th, however, from what I've heard the apocalyptic tale hones in on vast existential themes that are often lost in summer blockbuster disaster films (hence the release date).  The film was supposed to release in November of last year (in time for awards season), however, the film was delayed and rumored to release in January.  This lead me to think, skip awards season...what's wrong with it?  Either the release date is part of the marketing smoke and mirrors,  or, it is truely a March hooplah contender.  If anything is wrong we will find out come October.

The beginning of the trailer is a little too Day After Tomorrow, but, I assume its only a devise to grab the interest of the average movie goer.  Once the premise is established,  the following two minutes shows Hillcoat's true style.

This is a must see, even if it eventually disappoints.

======

When I first wrote about, Cass McComb's "Dream Come True Girl," I said that the song took me to the soda jerks and high school gyms of the 50's.  While my imagination ran wild, placing my finger on a spot on the American culture timeline, the video simply says don't go backwards.  Look at where the music belongs today.  When we hear sounds of vintage styles our first inclination is to refer to it in the context of the past, however, we don't live in the 50's (some of us never have, myself included).  Lets not overlook that this is the music of today.  Cass McCombs' video shows us where this nostalgic music is heard (appreciated) today, a hipster skater den where couches are used as launch ramps and a lonesome cowboy entertains the marginilized youth.  The times have changed, but, some music stays the same.

Modest Mouse/ "Satellite Skin" Streaming

A posted earlier in the week, Modest Mouse is releasing a 7" single of "Satellite Skin" and "Guilty Cocker Spaniels."

New Mos Def "Casa Bey" & Cudi talks with Pitchfork

Mos Def is back with some new material.  "Casa Bey" is off of his coming album Ecstatic (June 9).  I really dig the simplicity of the video along with the idea that the video's concept puts forth.  When discussing hip hop, the literal meaning of lyrics plays second to tempo, rhythme, and the style of language that creates the sonic environment. (words emerge from shapes) Some people criticize Mos Def's flow for being lyrically indecipherable.  Now that you know what he is saying...does it matter?

==========

When I first heard Destructo mix in Kid Cudi's Day 'N' Nite at the Avalon this past January, I took huge notice of Cudi and immediately got his mixtape A Kid Named Cudi.  The stoner anthem is unique in its ability to span multiple genres, house, electro, hip hop and I am sure some indie kids will add it to their Echoplex set sooner or later.  That element of his music is one of many that Cudi talks about in Pitchfork's short but to the point interview.  Cudi claims that his debut will be highly experimental in an effort to master creating his own sound because "people are taking [his] sound."  In the interview Cudi dishes on who he has collaborated with and who he hopes to before the album is finished.  One of his hopefuls is Band Of Horses, in which Cudi sampled Ben Bidwell's vocals for "The Prayer" on A Kid Named Cudi.  Check the entire interview here.

Next Animal Collective Single & Jack White in Music Politics

No the above art is not the cover of the next Jimmy Buffet Greatest Hits disc (that will surely be released again this summer for all you middle aged Orange County Coconuts).  That colorful island flavor will wrap the next Animal Collective single Summertime Clothes 12".  "Summertime Clothes" will be Animal Collective's second single off of hyclaimed (see what I did there hyped and acclaimed together...) Merriweather Post Pavilion.  With June 21st slowly but surely approaching the single will be just in time for us to all put on some "Summertime Clothes."  The 12" will release on July 7 via Domino Records and will also include three remixes of the track from Zombie, Dam-Funk, and L.D.  A video will also be made by director Danny Perez (responsible for "Who Could Win a Rabbit" video).

========

According to Pitchfork, Jack White's involvement in the Memphis community is expanding beyond his cash only Third Man Records.  White will be giving Nashville Mayor, Karl Deacon, advice on how to keep the Music City, musically relevant.

The Associate Press reports, Jack has become a member of Nashville's 46-member Music Business Council. The Council's goal is to further the town's reputation as a music town (what Los Angeles is to film, New York is to fashion, Nashville must be to music).  The Nashville MBC is "expected to advise on initiatives including the construction of a downtown amphitheater, the expansion of the CMA Music Festival, the creation of a new, non-country festival and the enhancement of music education." Any arts initiative is worth getting input from one of the leading creative minds in the "biz." (musically or otherwise)

Black Lips "The Drop I Hold" (feat. GZA)

The Black Lips' version of "The Drop I Hold" that features GZA isn't much more than the original with a spliced in verse from GZA.  Instrumentally, the song remains the same.  I saw the Black Lips live a few weeks back at the El Rey in Los Angeles and left emphatic about the band and the movement they seem to be generating.  The Black Lips create a live show that is basement punk meets psychedelic East Village loft (with projected air bubbled celluloid, that begs to ask which Punk drank the Electric Kool-Aid?).  So my love for the Black Lips will not be skewed by this track.  Cole Alexander's rhyme scheme in the original version was understandable as it related to the original dingy echo.  However, when followed by an actual rapper, it takes Alexander's flow out of its original context and into a hip hop realm.  When existing in that world Alexander's lyrics become blase (near amateur, which is not how I originally felt).  Now, the Black Lips and GZA probably weren't intending to make a rap song out of a lo-fi, twangy garage rock song, but, in the end the two hues fail to mix properly.  "The Drop I Hold" is better listened to as a form of improvised rock, than hip hop infused lo-fi.

Animal Collective (Live)

NPR was on hand for the first show of Animal Collective's spring tour at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.  The group played a new song tentatively named "Bleed" that you can get for free at Collected Animals.

rye rye vs. the juan maclean "The Simple Bang":

More dance savy electro noir mix of Rye Rye's "Bang."

kid cudi vs. cornelius "Another Day 'N' Nite":

Although, I like Destructo's mix of Day 'N' Nite the best, Cornelius offers an electro-funk style that vibes just as easy as Destructo's House translation.

yung la vs solid gold "Who Ain't I Gonna Run To":

Imagine alien hype-men, bouncing hover craft Lincoln Town Cars (LTD El Dorado) w/light stream hyrdolics, and being  strapped with laser guns.  Solid Gold's imagination mixes with Yung L.A. to create a futuristic Hotlanta.  Intergalactic rap!

New Modest Mouse Single (soon)

Modest Mouse was set to release two tracks on a "7 for Record Store Day.  Unfortunately, the special edition (4,000 copies of embossed cover and orange vinyl) didn't make it on shelves.  That was the bad news, but, here is the good... the vinyl's inevitable release is May 26 (on both vinyl and iTunes).  The single will showcase unreleased tracks "Satellite Skin" and "Guilty Cocker Spaniel."  Both tracks will have videos made and a clip for "Satellite Skin" will debut on their Myspace on May 15.

mp3 squeeze

Some cool mp3's via the Fader

In 1980, Chandra Oppenheim recorded her biggest hit at just 12 years old on album Transportation.  She was backed by Model Citizens and the Dance, creating a bare bones tune that showcases the youthful nature of punk and all of its influences.  Punk always makes all angst poignant, and Chandra achieves the same, with psych post-punk "Kate," in which to a twelve year old girl, "its not fair/everyone stares at the girl with blonde hair."

Download at the Fader.

I can't get enough of the scuzz.  Tyvek's "Hey Una" is a splashing bop, that packs Ramone-like energy.  Tyvek's newest disc is out May 18th.

Killers Cover Bright Eyes' "Four Winds."  New Wave expression of Conor Oberst's amazing lyrical chops.

=======================

White Antelope is Robin Pecknold's solo efforts (solo not in the vain of straying from the Fleet Foxes, but, acoustic sketches that don't demand a full band).

Passion Pit's "Moth's Wings" is bombastic and a massively beautiful track.  While vocals remind some of their emo pasts, the subject matter takes upon a greater scope.  Simply powerful.

thrashin' vs. vega

Although great 80's films are slim, 80's BMX/Skate montage movies runs a close second to John Hughes' classics.

The Butter Team has linked up Vega's "No Reason" with "skater dude" Josh Brolin in Thrashin'.

Ever since the White Stripes had to cut their 2007 tour short, citing Meg's anxiety, the band's future has been in question.  Some rumors swirled, whispering in fan's ears that WS were due to release an album this summer.  Then it was revealed that Jack White's summer project was not with Meg, but, with "VV" and the Dead Weather.  On top of his new super group, Jack White mentioned he was working on a White Stripes documentary.  Documentary is exciting news, but; what about Meg?  What about the White Stripes?

Today, Pitchfork cited an interview with Jack by Music Radar.  When asked about the next White Stripes disc Jack said, "It won't be too far off.  Maybe next year."  Next year might seem far away or not realistic with the success of Dead Weather yet to be decided and his slew of verging projects (see Jack White's to-do-list).  However, he keeps us hopeful by revealing that they have already recorded "a couple songs."

Jack White plays a huge role on Dex Romweber Duo's "Last Kind Word."  Dex Romweber is one of Jack's heros and he produced the 7" in his home studio to be release on his label Third Man at the end of May.  On the track Jack sings, plays guitar, and musical saw.  Jack has run out of instruments to learn and has now looked to the work bench for new challenges.   What it is, to be so talented...
